London, Apr 15 (ANI): A London Assembly report has claimed that tourists might face transportation problems during the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games.

Stressing that transportation in the country remains “one of the biggest risks,” the report, by the assembly’s transport committee, said that the city’s transport network was already running at near-full capacity, The BBC reports.

Over a million extra journeys are expected across the busiest nine days of the Games, and Transport for London said it was not being complacent about the task.

The report’s authors have highlighted that 22 “travel hotspots” likely to experience an extreme surge of demand.

Committee chairwoman Val Shawcross said that London would face “extreme demand on a network already creaking at the seams”.

“While on a good day the higher demand may be confined to a few ‘travel hotspots’, in the event of a broken-down train or a security incident, there would be a wider impact. Demand for transport services elsewhere is also possible as people seek alternative ways to make trips,” the report said.

“All regular users of the transport system are likely to notice differences in 2012,” it added.

Some 5.3 million visitors are expected to present during the Games.

Meanwhile, a TfL spokeswoman expressed hope that things will fall in place soon, adding: “We’re confident we’ll get all athletes, spectators and officials to their events on time and keep London moving.” (ANI)
