New York City, Mar 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) New York City officials have announced that transgender couples in the city should be allowed to marry.

The decision which was announced on Tuesday would allow a couple who tried to marry back in 2009 to do so now. The couple walked into the Bronx office of the City Clerk to have their marriage finalized but was turned away when a worker asked them to produce their birth certificates along with their IDs.

The man was born a woman before he underwent the surgery and the reverse was true for the woman. The couple threatened to sue the city and sent a petition to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. After series of consultations and negotiations, Quinn announced on Tuesday that state workers should treat every New Yorker the same way.

The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund expressed their delight with the decision of the City Council Speaker. The executive director, Michael Silverman said that, “Transgender people are challenged all the time about their status as men and women. We applaud the City Clerk’s office for adopting this policy and for taking steps to ensure that this does not happen again.”
