Toxic fumes kill six in China tunnel
December 10th, 2011 - 6:00 am ICT by IANSBeijing, Dec 10 (IANS) Six workers suffocated to death after inhaling toxic smoke in an under-construction railway tunnel in China’s Chongqing city, authorities said.
The incident took place Friday when welders inadvertently ignited rubber materials, unleashing toxic fumes into the tunnel in Chongqing’s Yongchuan district, Xinhua reported.
Two workers died at the scene, and four at the hospital, officials said.
The tunnel is part of the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway, a key transportation project between the two metropolises of Chengdu and Chongqing.
Chongqing is one of the country’s four directly-controlled municipalities — the other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.
