Topless GASP jeans ad most complained about in 2009
December 15th, 2009 - 6:05 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Dec 15 (ANI): A billboard of topless women in denim jeans has topped the list of the most complained about advertisements for 2009.
The ad, for fashion label GASP denim, which ran in Victoria only, received 250 complaints.
Despite the complaints, the case was still dismissed by the Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB).
Denim had a bad rap in 2009, with another ad by Target also featuring prominently in the top 10 offenders.
The Advanced Medical Institute had the most complaints, with three of its advertisements in the top 10.
All three revolved around men’s sexual issues and featured slogans such as “Men do it LONGER” and were complained about for their portrayal of sex.
The list comes after a Toyota Yaris ad was slammed for its ‘abuser-generated content’.
The ad was branded ‘incestuous’ and ‘very offensive and incredibly degrading to women’.
ASB chief executive officer Fiona Jolly said discrimination and sex were the hot topics when it came to ad complaints this year.
“Through its complaints, the community has made constant comment about sex, sexuality and nudity,” News.com.au quoted her as saying. (ANI)
