Top Chinese foreign official travels to N. Korea to ease tensions over WikiLeaks release
December 1st, 2010 - 3:00 pm ICT by ANIBeijing, Dec 1 (ANI): Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo is rushing to North Korea to deal with concerns that surfaced after WikiLeaks disclosed reports that Beijing was ready to support Korean unification.
Bingguo, the state counsellor for foreign affairs, is expected to press the leadership in Pyongyang to enter regional talks.
The Telegraph quoted Japanese reports as saying that Dai would offer reassurances over reported comments by more junior Chinese officials that Beijing would not interfere in the reunification between both the countries.
According to a cable from Kathleen Stephens, the US ambassador to Seoul, South Korea had been told that China foresaw the downfall of North Korea in “two to three years” after the death of Kim Jong-il.
The cables also said that despite Dai’s several visit to the North, he never dared to tell the Pyongyang leader that China was getting frustrated with its neighbour.
Although Beijing has not commented on the leaks, Dai is expected to tell Pyongyang the reported remarks did not represent the thinking of the senior Chinese leadership, the paper said.
The cable has raised concerns about relations between China and North Korea. (ANI)
