Three thieves burnt alive by Peru mob
March 21st, 2011 - 11:17 am ICT by IANSLima, March 21 (IANS/EFE) Residents of a mining town in Peru’s southeast burnt three men alive after they stole gold from a local storage centre, police said.
The incident occurred in La Rinconada town in Puno region when a gang entered a gold storage centre and allegedly took a quantity of the precious metal.
However, a group of managed to apprehend four of them, while they were carrying out the stolen gold.
After a village trial, the residents decided to burn three of the men alive, but the fourth man saved his life by claiming that he was forced to take part in the act by the others, the Peru.21 daily reported.
Police tried to rescue the captured trio, but the mob did not allow them to approach the spot.
The mob justified their action by saying they were intending to put a stop to the recent thefts of gold they had mined.
