Three teenagers arrested in UK Sikh shopkeeper murder case
February 26th, 2010 - 1:08 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb. 26 (ANI): Three teenagers have been arrested in the murder case of a Sikh shopkeeper, who was killed while trying to fight a gang of robbers who had intruded into his UK shop.
Last Friday, Gurmail Singh, 63, fell to the ground during his clash with a gang of four robbers at his convenience store in the Cowcliffe area of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
A group of passers-by tried to prevent the gang of four leaving the shop but they eventually forced their way out after a struggle.
Singh was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but died from his injuries in the early hours of Sunday.
The Sun quoted a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson, as saying that a trio of youths are being quizzed over the brutal murder.
And deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman paid tribute to Singh in the Commons.
Harman told MPs: “I want to express my sincerest condolences to the family for what is an absolutely tragic loss of life, an absolutely tragic situation.
“I know that it’s something obviously felt not only very deeply by his immediate family but by the whole neighbourhood and I pay tribute to those who, from the local pub, went to his aid,” he added.
Labour’s Barry Sheerman said Singh had been “much-loved and respected” and asked whether it would be an appropriate time to debate the values of small shops.
Harman said the Government took “every step” to ensure that corner shops were supported. (ANI)
