Three killed in Venezuela prison riot
September 28th, 2010 - 1:07 pm ICT by IANSCaracas, Sep 28 (IANS/EFE) At least three prisoners died and four people were injured in a riot at a jail in Venezuela, authorities said.
The incident took place Monday at the Tocoron prison in the northeastern Venezuelan state of Aragua, police said.
A police officer confirmed the deaths of the three inmates and added that three guards and another prisoner were wounded during the violence.
Earlier media reports said that 80 inmates had died in the Tocoron riot, a report that interior ministry officials denied.
In 2009, at least 366 prisoners died in violent incidents in the country’s prisons, according to figures compiled by a humanitarian organisation.
