Islamabad, May 6 (Xinhua) A suicide bomber Tuesday tried to attack a security check post in northwestern Pakistan, killing three people and injuring five others, local TV channel Dawn News reported. A man in a cycle rickshaw tried to enter the check post in Bannu city in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) before being stopped by the police. The suspect blew himself up near the post, killing himself and two other policemen, said the report.

Five people who were injured in the attack were taken to a military hospital in Bannu.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast.

This was the second attack in two days on security forces in the northwest following the breakdown of peace talks between the Taliban and the government.

A soldier was injured when Taliban militants attacked an army patrol in the South Waziristan tribal region Monday.

On April 23, Baitullah Mehsud, chief of umbrella militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), had asked his militants to stop violence in Waziristan, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan and other areas in the northwest for bringing peace to the region. He had said negotiations were going on with the government on a possible peace accord and demanded the withdrawal of troops from the tribal areas.

However, TTP saturday stopped further talks with the jirga (tribal council), claiming that the federal and NWFP governments were not sincere. The outfit said the government’s refusal to withdraw troops from the tribal areas was the main reason for the suspension of peace talks.

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said Sunday that the government would not talk to terrorists or extremists, although it was willing to hold dialogue with those who surrender their arms.
