Three killed as train hits bus in China
March 24th, 2011 - 3:20 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, March 24 (IANS) At least three people were killed and dozens injured when a bus dashed across a railway track and was hit by a train Thursday morning in China, Xinhua reported.
The passengers included schoolchildren who were on their way to school, and the accident occurred in China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the agency said.
Urumqi’s police chief Wang Mingshan earlier estimated five people were killed the accident.
The bus rushed across the railway track and was hit by the train at 9:07 a.m., in Urumqi, the regional capital, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xinjiang regional committee stated.
Three people aboard the bus died on the spot and over 50 passengers were injured, according to the statement.
“There was a full load of passengers on the bus and many began to jump out of the windows before the train hit on the bus,” said a local storekeeper, who only gave his surname as Xiao.
