Three dead in University of Alabama shooting
February 13th, 2010 - 11:00 am ICT by IANSWashington, Feb 13 (DPA) Three people have been killed and three wounded in a shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama, a television report said.
The suspect was a female member of the University of Alabama-Huntsville faculty, Huntsville police told the local NBC affiliate WAFF Friday. She had reportedly been denied tenure in her job.
The campus was put on lock-down and the suspected shooter was in custody, the university said on its website, adding that no students were involved.
The shooting happened in the Shelby Centre, a math and science classroom building, where the suspected faculty member had reportedly just learned she would not receive tenure during a biology faculty meeting.
In American academe, tenure guarantees a professor a position unless there is just cause to fire him or her.
Police also took the suspected shooter’s husband into custody, but no charges have been filed against him, WAFF reported.
University spokesman Ray Garner confirmed three people were shot and killed.
