Kabul, July 13 (IANS) Thousands of people Wednesday attended the funeral of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s half-brother a day after he was assassinated by one of his bodyguards, a media report said.
The president and tribal leaders paid their last respects near Kandahar to Ahmed Wali Karzai who was killed Tuesday, AKI news agency said.
At the time of his death, Karzai was at a meeting with tribal elders and politicians at his home in Kandahar, according to witnesses.
Karzai, born in 1961, suffered bullet wounds to his head and chest.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Qari Yusuf Ahmadi - who claimed to speak for the Taliban - said one of Karzai’s bodyguards who worked for Taliban gunned down the president’s half-brother.
The attacker was identified as head of security Sardar Muhammad.
The New York Times quoted witnesses as saying that Karzai’s security guards immediately shot dead Sardar Muhammad.
Some of them dragged the assailant’s body and strung him up at the crossroads of the central bazaar, an intelligence official said.
