TalibanIslamabad, Feb 9 (Xinhua) At least 13 civilians were killed Monday when mortar shells hit some houses in Pakistan’s tribal region, the military said.

The shells were fired by the militants in Dera Adam Khel in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), it said.

Locals said that a mortar hit at a girls’ school building and when the people rushed to the school building for rescue, another mortar landed at the site, causing casualties.

Tribesmen protested against the killing of the civilians and blocked a main highway between the city of Peshawar in the country’s northwest and the port city of Karachi.

Last year, the security forces expelled Taliban from Dera Adam Khel, some 35 km from Peshawar, the NWFP capital. The Taliban have staged a comeback in the area in recent weeks.
