Terrorism still remains a global threat: Canadian PM
September 12th, 2010 - 5:43 pm ICT by ANIOttawa, Sept 12 (ANI): Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has warned that terrorism is still prevalent nine years after the September 11 attacks in America, and added that no country is immune to terrorism.
“Sadly, the threat of terrorism is still very much a global reality, including right here at home. No country is immune,” the Globe and Mail quoted Harper, as saying.
“International and home-grown radical groups continue to pose a real danger to our safety, and we must remain ever-vigilant,” he added.
Twenty-four Canadians were among the 2,974 people killed when terrorists hijacked four passenger planes, crashing two into New York’s World Trade Centre and one into the Pentagon in Washington.
Another plane, believed destined for the U.S. capital, crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers tried to overpower the hijackers, the paper reports.
Canada has been part of the war on terrorism since 2002 and lost 152 soldiers and four civilians in Afghanistan.
Harper said his Conservative government has been taking “decisive action” since the hijackings to stop terrorist financing, terrorist operations and terrorist attacks.
“The tragic events of September 11 remain fresh and clear in all of our hearts and minds. The memory of that day continues to evoke horror and sorrow in all Canadians, despite the passing of nearly a decade,” he added. (ANI)
