Terror drill at London Olympics village

London, May 11 (IANS) Special anti-terror troops fired live bullets “to add to a sense of reality” during a full-scale drill at the Olympic Games village in London, officials said.

Troops from the Special Air Service (SAS) took part in the mock attack - dubbed Operation Wooden Pride - over three days at the village, The Sun reported.

The drill was part of a “dry run” at combating a Munich-style attack on athletes.

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were killed by terrorists who took them hostage in the accommodation complex.

British intelligence officials believe that the 2012 event may be a “top target” for terrorists.

An official said the mock drill “ran through the methods of dealing with an attack by terrorist gunmen intent on taking hostages”.

It also ensured cooperation between the military and police, and gave them a chance to get to know the village layout.
