Tejaswini Sawant shoots bronze at Munich World Cup

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) Tejaswini Sawant won a bronze in the women’s three position rifle event of the shooting World Cup at Munich Tuesday.
Tejaswini, 28, had to rest content with a third place finish with a score of 685.0 (588+97.0). In the qualification, Tejaswini shot 588 with a perfect score of 200 in Prone, 192 in Standing and 196 in the Kneeling position.

Tejaswini, a first time World Cup finalist, started the final round in second place, only two points behind the leader.

While fighting for the gold, the Indian shooter fired a 6.9 on her ninth final, missing a chance to finish at the top of the podium.

“The pressure was quite high, and I made a mistake. My goal is to shoot better scores, and better finals. I will have a try at the next world cup stage in Milan, next week”, Tejaswini said.

Another Indian shooter Lajja Gauswami came within sniffing distance of winning a medal.

The young shooter started the final in third place with a qualification score of 587, just three points short of the leader, but a fatal 7.8 on her eighth final shot, landed her on the sixth place with a total score of 682.4 (587+95.4).

The third Indian in the event, Meena Kumari shot 569 to finish 67th in strong field of 80 shooters.

Yin Wen of China won the gold with a total score of 687.5 (590+97.5) points, claiming her fourth consecutive world cup gold medal since the beginning of the season.

Germany’s Sonja Pfeilschifter shot the silver medal with a total score of 685.7 (584+101.7) points, winning her second podium this week. The German athlete, a world record holder in both the women’s Olympic rifle events, had won silver also at the 10m Air Rifle final that took place three days ago.
