Kabul, Feb 27 (IANS) In a massive manhunt launched across Afghanistan, a key Taliban leader named Mullah Musazai responsible for killing five Polish soldiers last year was shot dead while five others Taliban militants have been killed in countrywide operations, officials said Monday.
Musazai was killed in the eastern province of Ghazni Sunday night, provincial police chief Zarawar Zahid told Xinhua.
Musazai was responsible for a roadside bomb attack near provincial capital Ghazni that killed five Polish soldiers with the NATO-led alliance Dec 21 last year.
Meanwhile, five suspected Taliban militants were killed and 22 arrested in joint operations in eight Afghan provinces, the interior ministry said Monday.
The Afghan National Police, army, the National Directorate of Security and NATO-led coalition forces launched operations in Kandahar, Kunduz, Balkh, Nimroz, Wardak, Khost, Ghazni and Logar provinces.
Afghan forces and NATO-led troops have intensified clean-up operations in the country.
Around 200 militants have been killed and nearly 600 detained since the beginning of this year, the ministry said.
The Taliban are yet to make any comment.
