Taiwan destroys two tonnes of chemical-tainted drinks
June 12th, 2011 - 6:50 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, June 12 (IANS) Taiwan has destroyed over two tonnes of beverages believed to be tainted with a “dangerous chemical”, a media report said.
Authorities inspected 16,000 stores over the past month and removed soft drinks, teas and health supplements containing DEHP or Diethylhexyl phthalate, a cost effective chemical used mainly for making plastic soft and pliable, the China Daily reported.
The chemical is believed to cause hormonal imbalance in the human body.
Though there have been no confirmed reports of people suffering from the drinks, many countries have banned a long list of Taiwan-made products fearing contamination.
Last week, China’s food quality watchdog said sports drinks, juices, tea, fruit jams or syrups and food additives produced by 10 Taiwan-based companies would be banned from entering the Chinese mainland.
