Sydney teacher in soup for ‘taping students’ mouths shut in class’
October 23rd, 2010 - 4:36 pm ICT by ANISydney, Oct 23 (ANI): A teacher from an elite school in Sydney has landed in trouble after taping the mouths of two talkative boys in the class.
The North Sydney boys’ school Shore has reported the incident to the NSW Ombudsman, as required under child protection laws.
Deputy Ombudsman Steve Kinmond said independent schools such as Shore were forced to outsource costly child protection investigations, which were handled more routinely within the Catholic and government systems.
The chairman of the Shore board, Roger Corbett, said a teacher had been disciplined after his ‘extremely unwise’ act of taping the mouths of two students who were talking in class, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
He said the teacher had ‘exercised poor judgment and was appropriately dealt with’.
‘Shore has handled the matter in an appropriate way,’ Corbett said.
‘As far as Shore is concerned, the matter is closed.’
Meanwhile, parent of one of the boys was happy with how the incident had been handled and another has referred the matter to the police. (ANI)
