Sydney, Jan 30 (DPA) Sydney police said Friday they had broken Australia’s biggest ever shoplifting operation after uncovering a “treasure trove” of stolen goods worth millions of dollars. Two men stopped for acting suspiciously led them to a warehouse full of perfume, shampoo, after-shave, razor blades and other toiletries.

There was enough loot to fill 750 packing cases, Constable Bridget O’Donnell said.

“What we saw was piles and piles of boxes, literally from floor to ceiling, not stacked in any manner,” she told reporters. “It was overwhelming, something I have never seen before, but even at that stage I didn’t understand the enormity of it.”

The police say the racket may have been going on for more than 10 years.

The two arrested men, aged 71 and 45, are alleged to have bought stolen goods from their gang of thieves and fenced them through crooked retailers.
