London, April 25 (ANI): Princess Madeleine of Sweden has broken off her engagement to Jonas Bergstrom, after reports emerged accusing the lawyer of having an affair with a Norwegian handball star.

“They have decided that the best for them is to go their separate ways,” the Times quoted a Swedish royal statement, as saying.

The announcement came at the same time as the publication of an article in a Norwegian celebrity mag in which the 21-year-old young sportswoman claimed to have romanced Bergstrom last year.

Tora Uppstrom Berg said she and Bergstrom spent a night together at a hotel in a Swedish ski resort last April.

She told the mag: “I had an affair with Madde’s fiancé last year. We were intimate,”

According to Uppstrom Berg, at the time, she did not know she was in a relationship with Madeleine’s fiancé.

She said: “Had I known he had a girlfriend I never would have done anything.

“I feel sorry for Madeleine that her man is unfaithful and I can only say I’m pleased that Queen Silvia has now confirmed that the wedding has been postponed.”

Madeleine, 27, and Bergstrom, 31, had been together for the last eight years and their engagement was announced last August. (ANI)
