Surat bombing suspect arrested in Britain
March 4th, 2010 - 7:13 am ICT by IANSLondon, March 4 (IANS) A suspected terrorist who allegedly masterminded an attack in Gugarat’s Surat city 17 years back has been arrested in Britain and will be presented before a court March 25.
Tiger Hanif,49, was arrested from a grocery story at a village in Bolton and remanded in custody to face a hearing which will decide his extradition to India.
Hanif has been wanted by Indian authorities to face trial for masterminding the double bombing in Surat in 1993 in which an eigth-year-old girl was killed and 38 people were injured.
A former state minister, Mohammad Surti, was found guilty in the case and jailed for 20 years.
According to police, Hanif availed a British passport and had been hiding in the guise of Mohammed Patel. He was arrested by the Scotland Yard police last month, Daily Mirror reported.
