Super Kings to face Kolkata Knight RidersMay 17th, 2009 - 7:47 pm ICT by IANS
Centurion, May 17 (IANS) Chennai Super Kings will look to climb a step up in the points table when they take struggling Kolkata Knight Riders in Indian Premier League here Monday.
Chennai, with 15 points out of their 12 matches, are next only to table-toppers Delhi Daredevils. A win will coast them to safer shores of a semi-final berth. Knight Riders, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the table and slumped to their tenth defeat when they went down by six-wickets to Deccan Chargers.
Knight Riders looked on haplessly as Chargers sneaked past with an unlikely win right under their noses. The team has been beaten by all and sundry and needs an inspiring performance from somebody to lift their sagging morale.
David Hussey’s presence has provided some spark in the batting but overall the team has appeared clueless in crunch situation. Knight Riders will have to leave behind their last-over thrashing of IPL debutant Mashrafe Mortaza by Rohit Sharma if they are to end their campaign on a high.
Super Kings, the last year’s finalist, have been benefitted by the blistering form of leading run scorer and Orange Cup holder Matthew Hayden, who so far has accumulated 546 runs in the tournament. He has been ably supported by Suresh Raina and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Among the bowlers, Lakshmipathy Balaji, with 13 wickets has emerged as the most successful bowler. Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati has come out good and so has part-timer Raina and spin wizard Muttiah Murlitharan.
The first match of the two teams was washed out by rain.
