Study says that Norway is the best country to be mom
May 4th, 2011 - 7:40 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, May 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study has ranked the best place to be a mother. The ranking come just days before this year’s Mother’s Day. The study ranked Norway ahead of all the countries in the world as the place to be a mother.
In all there were 164 countries involved in the ranking. With the long war running in the country, Afghanistan was ranked as the worst place to be a mother. The study was conducted by the organization, Save the Children. The ranking is based primarily on the prospects of mothers in those countries.
Norway has one of the lowest maternal mortality in the world. Current data shows that only one in 7,600 women who go to birth actually dies. That is much lower than the rate in the United States. United States has maternal rate of 1 in 2,100 which is considered one of the highest in the developed world.
The United States was ranked 31st in the list. Save the Children says the seemingly poor performance of the United States in the ranking is due to several factors including the maternal leave laws, number of women in political positions and the rate of children who attend pre-school in the country.
