Strong earthquake shakes Afghanistan

Earthquake in AfghanistanAn intensity scale of 5.9 Richter scale shook Afghanistan and the quake occured on Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 22:56:29 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time ) and Monday, October 06, 2008 at 03:26:29 AM at epicenter local time as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter is 70 km (45 miles) SSE of KABUL, Afghanistan ,105 km (65 miles) WSW of Jalalabad, Afghanistan,195 km (120 miles) W of Peshawar, Pakistan, 270 km (165 miles) NNW of Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan with the depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) set by location program.

No reports of casualties or damage have been reported.

An earthquake in 2004 killed three in Afghanistan. In 2005, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in October 2005 killed more than 73,000 people.
