Spencer Tunick eyes Salford for next naked human formation
March 8th, 2010 - 12:52 pm ICT by ANILondon, March 8 (ANI): Spencer Tunick, the renowned artist behind formations featuring large numbers of nude people, has set his sight on Salford, Greater Manchester, England as the destination for his next commission.
The famous photographer, whose diverse locations include Sydney Opera House and a vineyard in Burgundy, is set to pay homage to LS Lowry, the late English painter known for his depiction of ordinary people and their lives in Salford and surrounding areas.
Tunick hopes to recruit 1,000 people and take them to eight locations around the city on May 1 and 2 for his latest photographic work entitled Everyday People.
“Salford and Manchester presents an intriguing prospect for my latest UK installation based both on the rich industrial heritage that exists across both cities and the art of LS Lowry. His paintings depicting the mass of everyday people who contributed to the industrial machine of the 20th century also provide an interesting frame of reference for possible compositions,” Times Online quoted Tunick as saying.
Michael Howard, a lecturer in art and design at Manchester Metropolitan University and the author of LS Lowry: A Visionary Artist, claimed Lowry would have highly favoured Tunick’s project.
He said: “[Lowry] studied life drawing for 20 years, both the male and female form. So he would have been absolutely fascinated by it. He was obsessed by people and places.”
Howard added: “He showed us a world made strange. It is the same with Spencer Tunick.” (ANI)
