Madrid, March 12 (IANS) Hundreds of thousands of people took part in fresh demonstrations throughout Spain Sunday to protest the government’s new labour reforms.

Protesters rallied in 60 Spanish cities against reforms which would slash the cost of firing workers and ease conditions under which they can be dismissed, reported Xinhua.

Unions claimed that around 500,000 protesters took to the streets in Madrid, where they marched from Plaza Neptuno to the emblematic Puerta de Alcala. Police sources, however, said the number was only close to 60,000.

Nevertheless, the protests in Madrid as well as in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Bilbao, among other cities, are seen as a strong show of support for a forthcoming general strike called for March 29.
