Paris, July 28 (IANS) Spain’s Carlos Sastre Sunday won the Tour de France cycling event, the seventh Spaniard to win the competition, EFE news agency reported. This is the third consecutive year that a Spaniard has won the event.
In the 1950s, three Frenchmen, Louison Bobet, Roger Walkowiak and Jacques Anquetil, won the annual event for three consecutive years.
Crowds jammed the Champs-Elysees to welcome the new champion.
Sastre maintained a close lead over Cadel Evans of Australia, finishing seven seconds behind his rival for a 58-second overall victory.
Bernhard Kohl of Austria won the third place.
“It was a lifelong dream. I feel happy to share this moment in the company of my family. My kids are happy,” the champion said.
