South Korean president meets Pyongyang delegation
August 23rd, 2009 - 9:33 am ICT by IANSSeoul, Aug 23 (Xinhua) South Korean President Lee Myung-bak held talks with a visiting North Korean delegation here Sunday amid Pyongyang’s latest conciliatory moves that show signs of easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, media reports said.
A high-level North Korean delegation arrived here Friday to pay their last respect to late former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung who died recently.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s close aides, Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yang Gon, are part of the Pyongyang delegation. President Lee, Unification Minister Hyun In-taek and other South Korean officials met the delegation at the president’s office for about 30 minutes, media reports said.
The officials discussed the release of four South Korean fishermen held by Pyongyang, resumption of the inter-Korean dialogue, among others, reports said.
The meeting went very well, Kim Ki Nam told reporters after the talks.
The North Korean delegation also delivered a message from their leader Kim Jong IL to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. They were expected to return to Pyongyang later Sunday.
