South Africa uses metro to carry waste to landfills

East London (South Africa), Nov 6 (IANS) A metro train system in South Africa is helping in the fight against climate change by carrying waste to landfill sites on trains instead of trucks, state-run news agency BuaNews reported.

The East London Metro was working hard to mitigate its impact on global warming and climate change, said a municipality official named Andile Fani.

“Our plans to participate in the fight (against climate change) include the reduction of waste trucks going to the landfill sites daily. We have a contract with Metrorail for trains to carry most of our waste to the landfill,” he said.

A workshop was organised jointly by the Metro, the National Environmental Affairs Department and the South African Local Government Association, where officials from different departments discussed ways of combating climate change.

Leigh Stolworthy, metro transport and planning interim director, said the city would soon implement the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

“With the implementation of the BRT, we hope to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads by encouraging passengers to use buses,” he said.
