Somali Red Crescent compound hit by mortar
April 14th, 2009 - 10:08 pm ICT by adminGENEVA (BNO NEWS) – A compound housing a limb-fitting center of the Somali Red Crescent Society in Mogadishu was hit by a mortar on Monday, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“The incident illustrates once more how dangerous it is in Mogadishu and how difficult it can be to provide victims of the armed conflict with medical care and humanitarian aid,” said Dr Ahmed M. Hassan, the president of the Somali Red Crescent.
The attack killed one civilian and wounded five others, none who were Somali Red Crescent staff or patients at the facility. The center is clearly marked with the red crescent emblem.
The agency said there was no evidence to suggest the center was deliberately targeted, but says all parties should respect and protect medical staff and infrastructures such as hospitals and clinics at all times.
The ICRC and Somali Red Crescent have been present in the country since 1982.
