Six soldiers killed in terrorist attack in central Yemen
May 15th, 2011 - 12:40 am ICT by BNO NewsSANAA, YEMEN (BNO NEWS) — At least six security men were killed early on Saturday by suspected terrorists in Yemen’s central province of Baidha’a, a security source said.
The state-run Saba news agency reported that a group of terrorist elements attacked a security point in Lamsan in the city of Radaa, killing six soldiers and wounding a seventh seriously.
No arrests have been made as the gunmen managed to escape.
On Friday, five soldiers were killed and two others were injured in an al-Qaida ambush in Marib province. Three suspected terrorists were also injured during the clashes with security forces.
The attack took place just after authorities announced that al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula was taking advantage of the unrest in the country to perpetrate terrorist acts.
Also on Friday, another group of suspected terrorists attacked a security checkpoint in the southern province of Shabwa. At least three police officers were killed and another one was injured.
Protests continue in the Middle Eastern country as hundreds of people are demanding the immediate departure of longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The government has recently stepped up the crackdown on demonstrators citing ‘civil disobedience.’
The Gulf Cooperation Council recently proposed a plan for a peaceful transition in Yemen which includes the resignation of Saleh within 30 days. Protesters rejected the proposed plan as they want the immediate ouster of Saleh.
According to the United Nations, the recent political turmoil has left an estimated 140 deaths and hundreds of injuries as security forces have been firing live ammunition in order to disrupt mass protests.
