Six killed, 44 wounded in Kabul suicide attack
August 18th, 2009 - 6:16 pm ICT by IANSKabul, Aug 18 (DPA) A suicide bomber attacked an international military convoy in the Afghan capital Kabul Tuesday, killing six people and wounding 44 others, officials said.
Another bomber attacked an army checkpoint in the southern province of Uruzgan, killing five people.
The attack in Kabul occurred when a bomber rammed his explosives-filled vehicle into a foreign military convoy on the Jalalabad road in the eastern part of the city, police official Abdul Manan said at the scene.
“Six dead bodies and 44 wounded people were brought to three hospitals in Kabul city from today’s (Tuesday) suicide attack,” Farid Rahid, spokesman for Afghan public health ministry told DPA.
He said most of the dead and wounded people were civilians.
At least three Afghans working for the UN were among the wounded, said a UN official who was in the area at the time of the blast but was unhurt.
General Zahir Azimi, a defence ministry spokesman, said three bodies and 21 wounded people were evacuated from the area, which was cordoned off by Afghan and British troops, to a military hospital in the city.
A source from the NATO-led international forces told DPA that a British military vehicle was in the area of the attack.
Also on Tuesday, a suicide bomber in Chora district in Uruzgan province attacked a checkpoint manned by Afghan army personnel, killing three soldiers and two civilians, provincial police chief Juma Gul Hemat said.
He said three more soldiers and three civilians were wounded in the blast, which took place some 30 km northeast of the provincial capital.
