Sentosa (Singapore), March 21 (IANS) The two-day battle for four coveted spots at The Open Championship will see a host of Indians led by Jyoti Randhawa and Shiv Kapur. The International Final Qualifying (IFQ) - Asia tees off at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore Tuesday. Held over 36 holes, a total of 67 players, primarily from the Asian Tour, will fight for places at The Open Championship in Royal Birkdale, England in July.
The Serapong course at the Sentosa Golf Club, home of the Asian Tour’s flagship event, the Barclays Singapore Open, will once play host to all The Open Championship hopefuls.
Headlining the Asian Tour charge will be Indian star Jyoti Randhawa who has enjoyed an impressive run of form this season to rise to 70th in the world, compatriot Shiv Kapur and Thailand’s Prom Meesawat who has enjoyed success at Sentosa previously.
Apart from Randhawa and Kapur, the 2005 Volvo Masters of Asia winner, the others are Rahil Gangjee, the 2004 Volkswagen - Masters, China winner, Digvijay Singh, Amandeep Johl and Gurbaaz Mann.
Other notable players vying for the top four spots include Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing, who played in his maiden Major at Carnoustie last year, compatriot Mardan Mamat, Filipino Juvic Pagunsan, Thailand’s Chinnarat Phadungsil and Japan Golf Tour regulars Tomohiro Kondo and Keiichiro Fukabori.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han believes that the region’s stars will be eager to sparkle in Sentosa to earn their right to play in the world’s oldest Major.
“This year’s IFQ will see another strong line-up from the Asian Tour. With the standards of our players improving every year, we hope to see our members contending at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July,” said Han.
Two of IFQs for the 2008 Open Championship have already been held at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, South Africa and The Lakes, Sydney, Australia. Other than the Asian qualifiers in Sentosa, the others will be in TPC Michigan/Dearborn, Michigan, USA and in at Sunningdale, Berkshire, England, both on June 30.
