London, Jan 29 (ANI): Taking a thinly-veiled swipe at his predecessor, Sir Paul Stephenson took office as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police saying that he had no intention of being a celebrity cop.

It is not my aim to be boring. Neither is it my aim to be a celebrity, the Sun quoted Stephenson, as saying.

It is my aim to be a top class police leader, he added.

His first step has been to distance himself from the regime of Sir Ian Blair, whose deputy he was for four years.

Ian Blair did it his way. I was his loyal deputy. I am now going to do it my way, Stephenson said.

I am the proudest copper in the country today, he added.

Sir Paul pledged a return to traditional policing.

The public want uniformed governance of the streets. Thats what I want, he said.

Sir Paul said volume crimes like burglary and car theft would be robustly tackled.

And he will continue the Mets get-tough approach on knife crime, which has led to a dramatic reduction in teenage murders.

We have to stop kids killing kids. It is about making sure people can go out and have a good time, feeling safe, he said. (ANI)
