Singer Wyclef Jean to run for Haitian Presidency
August 4th, 2010 - 5:08 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 4 (ANI): Former Fugees Singer Wyclef Jean has decided to contest for the post of President of Haiti.
Former Deputy Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques said Jean will run as part of his coalition in the November 28 election.
Jean’s spokesperson said the singer has planned to make an announcement on Thursday, but declined to say what it would be.
“Jean-Jacques, who will be seeking to return to the Chamber of Deputies in the election, said he will be a candidate for a new coalition that calls itself Ansanm Nou Fo, which translates as “together we are strong” in Creole,” reports Telegraph.
The 37-year-old singer was born outside Port-au-Prince but left the island as a child and grew up in Brooklyn.
Jean has always been an outspoken advocate for the Caribbean country in which he was born, and was one of the first celebs to travel to Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January.
Jean’s uncle, Raymond Joseph, who is Haiti’s ambassador to the US, is also contesting for the post of President.
Haiti’s current President, Rene Preval, has reached his term limits and cannot run a third time. (ANI)
