Sikh man shot dead in Toronto
September 12th, 2009 - 10:42 am ICT by IANSToronto, Sep 12 (IANS) A young Sikh man was shot dead early Friday morning in the Indian-dominated city of Brampton on the outskirts of Toronto.
The local police, who responded to an emergency call, said 33-year-old Devinder Singh Gill was found injured after being shot at about 4.20 a.m. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police didn’t clarify whether the house where Gill was found shot belonged to him.
No one has been arrested yet. Police also found no weapon at the crime scene.
The shooting reportedly occurred after an altercation at a gathering at the house, but police couldn’t confirm it. “We do not have a suspect description, and we are not even sure how many people we are looking for,” a police spokesman said.
Brampton, the fastest growing city in Canada, has a huge presence of the Punjabi community. In fact, all three Sikh MPs from the Toronto area - Ruby Dhalla, Gurbax Malhi and Navdeep Bains - come from Brampton.
