Sikh group asks UNESCO to preserve Haryana ruins
March 12th, 2011 - 11:55 am ICT by IANSNew York, March 12 (IANS) A Sikh community group has asked UNESCO to preserve and manage the ruins of Hondh-Chillar in Haryana, where a mass grave of Sikh victims of 1984 riots was recently found, under the World Heritage Programme.
The demand was made by a delegation of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) which met UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, Thursday to apprise her about the discovery of “mass grave” of Sikhs in Hondh-Chillar, according to Tejkaran Kaur Bains, Youth Coordinator SFJ.
In a memorandum to Bokova, SFJ said since UNESCO is mandated to protect ruins and sites across the world it was asking the UN body to preserve the Hondh-Chillar ruins “before they are completely destroyed just like many such sites across India where Sikhs were attacked and killed in November 1984.”
SFJ has also invited reputable archaeologists from Europe and North America who have worked on Jewish Holocaust sites and Armenian Genocide sites to seek expert guidance in preserving Hondh-Chillar Genocidal site, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to SFJ said.
