- London, Nov 6 (ANI): A couple has been ordered not to name and shame the vandal who smashed their shop window - in case it offended his human rights.
Dennis and Christine Lusby, of St Breward, Cornwall, wrote ‘Damage Done by Ben Hill’ on the boarded up windows of their village store after he went on a drunken rampage.
During his rampage on October 29, Hill, 20, caused the 3,000-pound worth of damage as he embarked on a spree, which also saw him attack cars, homes, farm buildings and a football club.
The couple shamed Hill by writing his name by writing his name on the boarded up shopfront in thick black pen after he was arrested and immediately jailed.
However, a local police officer told the couple to remove the words - in case they broke Hill’s civil liberties.
Dennis, 60, has refused to remove the name and says it will stay there until the windows are replaced.
‘Even in the smallest villages in the country there is a thug problem. Our shop window was smashed to pieces,” the Telegraph quoted Dennis as saying.
‘The lad was caught straight away but people kept coming in to ask us what had happened and who was responsible.
‘Eventually Christine wrote his name up there on the window boards. We thought we’d let everyone know who had done all the damage.
‘But then we were warned by the police for writing it because they say it’s taking away his civil liberties What about our civil liberties? We chose to quietly ignore the police advice,” he added. (ANI)
