Moscow, July 27 (IANS) Indian golfer Shiv Kapur faltered badly on the back stretch as he failed to cash in on the early flourish in the Inteco Russian Open to finish tied 23rd here Sunday. His final round of 71 saw him total 11-under 277.
The title went to Sweden’s Mikael Lundberg (68) with a total of 21-under 267. He emerged a comfortable winner despite a brilliant eight-under 64 by Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara on the final day. Lara, who had nine birdies and just one bogey, finished at 19-under 269 and in second place.
With four birdies and just one bogey on the front nine, Kapur was going great guns on the front nine but was unable to keep the tempo going on the back stretch and lapsed into bogeys as he finished with a final round of one-under 71.
Kapur, who had rounds of 67, 70 and 69 on the first three days, started the final round in 13th place. In the final round, he bogeyed the third, but then picked up the momentum with four birdies in five holes from fifth to ninth. He birdied the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth and turned in three-under to reach 13-under and he was bidding for a top-10 finish.
On the back nine, Kapur bogeyed the 10th, 12th and 16th and had just one birdie on the 13th to fall to 71.
