Leon (Spain), May 31 (IANS) Even as world champion Viswanathan Anand defends his Ciudad de Leon chess Tournament title in this Spanish city, another legendary Indian Satyajit Ray will be featured in a special screen showing. On the sidelines of this world-famous annual tournament, which is played on rapid format, there is also a special festival featuring films based on chess. Ray’s “Shatranj ke Khiladi” will be one of the five films to be screened.

The film is hailed a masterpiece in Indian cinema and is based on a novel by Munshi Prem Chand.

The drama, set in 1856, tells the story of a chess game between two men even as Indians were engaged in a battle against the British Empire. So consumed were they by chess, they noticed little else.

The film featured Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Shabana Azmi, Amjad Khan and Richard Attenborough.

The six films to be screened are: La Fiebre del ajedrez by Russian filmmaker Vsevolod Pudovkin, La partida de Ajedrez, Los caballeros del Sur del Bronx, Flesh and La nieve blanca de Rusia. Each is considered a classic.

Seven times winner in Leon, Anand is the favourite for the title he has won on the last three occasions from 2005 to 2007. His other wins here came in 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He has won the title six times in the last nine editions. He is already in the final this year.

The second semi-final will feature former World championship runner-up Alexei Shirov and Vassily Ivanchuk, who is currently the World No. 2 in rankings.
