Sex hormones help women beat common cold

Sydney, June 24 (IANS) Young women have it easier when it comes to fighting common cold as compared to their male counterparts.

Researchers led by Professor John Upham at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, however, found that these differences disappear after menopause in women.

“While these viruses are just a nuisance in healthy people, they can make people with asthma or other chronic lung diseases very unwell,” said Upham, according to a Queensland University release.

“In our efforts to find new ways to prevent these infections, we need to take into account the effects of hormones, and how they affect the immune system,” he said.
