Moscow, Aug 17 (RIA Novosti) At least seven people were killed and 11 injured Monday when two water conduits broke at a power station in Russia’s southern Siberia, officials said.
The accident occurred at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station, Russia’s largest, in south Siberia, an official said. He added that the emergency call was received at 04.42 a.m.

The third and fourth water conduits broke, flooding the engine room of the station. The production at the plant was stopped after the accident, Siberia’s emergencies department spokesman Dmitry Kudryavtsev said.

The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station first started its operation in 1978.

“The death toll has risen to seven people, with at least 11 injured,” Kudryavtsev said.

Earlier reports said at least six people were killed and seven injured in the accident.

Rescue officials said the toll could rise as people may still be trapped in the flooded rooms.

The accident may have been caused by a hydraulic surge, or a sharp increase in pressure, said Kudryavtsev.

Property worth hundreds of millions of rubles may have been damaged in the accident, said Yevgeny Druzyaka, an official of RusHydro, Russia’s largest power generator.

He said the repair work has already started at the plant.
