Baghdad, April 9 (Xinhua) At least seven people were killed and more than 20 wounded in a mortar attack on the Shia-dominated neighbourhood of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad Wednesday, a witness and a security sources said. “Three mortar rounds landed on a residential area in the Sadr City neighbourhood, killing seven people and wounding more than 20,” Abu Haider, a witness said.
He said that a mortar round struck a house and killed a woman and two children, while another round landed on a tent set up for a condolence service, killing four people and wounding more than 20 others.
An Iraqi police source confirmed the incident, but could not give details as the police forces withdrew from the Mahdi Army militia stronghold, leaving the area for the US and Iraqi army forces.
The attack came as the capital was under a traffic ban on the fifth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad. The ban left the streets deserted except for a few pedestrians.
