Scarlett case: Mother says trial could help other tourist victims seek justice
July 31st, 2010 - 5:16 pm ICT by ANILondon, July 31 (ANI): The mother of a teenager, Scarlett Keeling, who was killed in Goa in 2008, has said that she hopes the trial into her daughter’s death will encourage tourists to seek justice in India.
“There would be some kind of relief if Scarlett’s death caused some good improvements to the way tourists are treated over here, because she’s not the first by a long way that’s been murdered over here and those people have had no justice,” the BBC quoted Scarlett mother Fiona MacKeown, as saying.
The body of 15-year-old Scarlett of Bideford was found on a beach in Anjuna in Goa. Earlier, it was assumed to be an accidental case of drowning.
However a second autopsy, carried out after a campaign by MacKeown, revealed that she had a number of bruises on her body and had been raped.
On Friday, after the trial, Mackeown said that she is satisfied with speedy judicial process in her daughter’s trial.
“The judicial process is fast. I would like to believe that this is fast within India. I am happy with that,” she added. (ANI)
