Sarkozy hails China’s decision to meet Dalai Lama envoyApril 25th, 2008 - 7:26 pm ICT by admin
Paris, April 25 (DPA) French President Nicolas Sarkozy Friday welcomed the decision by the Chinese government to re-open talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama. “This is a major step. This renewed dialogue brings real hope,” Sarkozy said in a statement released by his office.
Sarkozy has openly urged Beijing to renew discussions with the Dalai Lama, to end the crisis sparked by China’s crackdown on Tibetan pro-independence demonstrations.
The French president had suggested that these talks could be a prerequisite for his attending the Aug8 opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
During a nationally televised interview late Thursday, Sarkozy said he had been “shocked by what happened in Tibet,” and that he had conveyed his feelings to the Chinese President Hu Jintao.
