Paris, Apr 22 (ANI): French President Nicolas Sarkozy is poised to become first sitting President of the Fifth Republic to be eliminated in the first round of the presidential election scheduled to take place in 12 months’ time, a new poll has suggested.

The Independent quoted that Harris poll as saying that Sarkozy, whose popularity has fallen to lowest record levels, would score not more than 19 to 20 percent of the first round vote that is almost certain to be held on 24 April 2012.

If the poll reports prove to be correct during the elections, Sarkozy would not be eligible to contest in the second round.

Only two candidates go forward to the second round. The system was designed to accommodate the traditional bi-polar politics of France, with the major candidates of “right” and left” qualifying for a run-off.

The poll also suggest that against two of the possible candidates of the main opposition party, far-right National Front under Marine Le Pen is predicted to top the poll.

Sarkozy has been reported saying that: “She won’t stay the course.” He intends to attack Le Pen on what he regards as her incoherent social and economic programme, which would force France to leave the European Union (EU). (ANI)
