Sania seeded 32nd in WimbledonJune 18th, 2008 - 10:09 pm ICT by IANS
London, June 18 (IANS) Sania Mirza has been seeded 32nd among women in the singles draw in Wimbledon Championships starting here at the All England Club on June 23. The seeding for the Grand Slam event was announced Wednesday.
Sania, who lost in the second round of the Ordina Open against local favourite Michaella Krajicek of Netherlands 2-6, 2-6 Wednesday, is currently ranked 33.
She returned to the circuit only last week at the DFS Classic in Birmingham after a three month long injury lay-off following a wrist surgery.
Despite being out of action, Sania’s ranking was steady and it will help her to enter the hallowed grass court of Wimbeldon as the last seed in women’s singles charts.
Sania, who is not in the best of form, will take inspiration from her third-round appearance at Wimbeldon last year.
Newly-crowned World No.1 and French Open champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia has been given the top billing among women, followed by compatriot Jelena Jankovic. Russian Maria Sharapova has been seeded third.
In the men’s seedings, Roger Federer, who will be defending five successive Wimbledon titles, is at the top. French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and Serb Novak Djokovic will start as second and third seed respectively.
