Nov 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Today Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Barcelona and consecrated the Sagrada Familia basilica which is considered one of the architectural wonders of the world. Over 5000 people gathered near the structure to witness its consecration. The Pope also addressed the thousands gathered to witness the consecration of the historic monument and he strongly condemned abortion in his speech. He also spoke about the conservative family values in the city which protested his arrival by gay kissing on the streets for 5 minutes.
The Pope’s speech was attended by thousands at the La Monumental bullring. The leader of the Catholics said that the love between the man and woman was the main basis of human life and thus the church will continue to resist every form of denial to human life. He also said that the church would provide support to everything that would promote the natural order in terms of the institution of family.
The Sagrada Familia basilica has been designed by legendary architect Antoni Gaudi. Pope Benedict XVI said that the consecration of the structure as basilica was a great event especially considering that man today claims to build his life without God. He also spoke about Antoni Gaudi and said that he was a devout Christian who kept the torch of his faith alive and lived in dignity and austerity. The Pope’s mass was attended by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia among thousands others. The Pope has earlier been critical of the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s move to legalize gay marriages, abortion and liberalization of divorces. The Prime Minister did not attend any of the masses by the Pope during his two day visit to the city.
