Russian schools may launch mandatory drug tests
May 17th, 2011 - 10:44 am ICT by IANSMoscow, May 17 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Mandatory drug tests in schools may soon be introduced in Russia if substance abuse among schoolchildren does not come to a halt, the country’s top official on drug and alcohol abuse has said.
“I think that the introduction of a voluntary testing programme for students will take two years. If the situation doesn’t stabilise and improve, then we will move to mandatory testing in schools,” said Yevgeny Brun.
Brun said the most popular drugs among teenagers were cannabis, ecstasy, amphetamines and hallucinogenics.
Russia has an estimated 2.5 million drug users.
